One Episode

Sunday, August 28, 2011

The two gentlemen then returned, languidly, to their hotel, and sent for a hackney coach, and in this commodious vehicle they rolled comfortably downtown. They measured the whole length of Broadway again and found it a path of fire; and then, deflecting to the left, they were deposited by their conductor before a fresh, light, ornamental structure, ten stories high, in a street crowded with keen-faced, light-limbed young men, who were running about very quickly and stopping each other eagerly at corners and in doorways. Passing into this brilliant building, they were introduced by one of the keen-faced young men-- he was a charming fellow, in wonderful cream-colored garments and a hat with a blue ribbon, who had evidently perceived them to be aliens and helpless--to a very snug hydraulic elevator, in which they took their place with many other persons, and which, shooting upward in its vertical socket, presently projected them into the seventh horizontal compartment of the edifice. Here, after brief delay, they found themselves face to face with the friend of their friend in London. His office was composed of several different rooms, and they waited very silently in one of them after they had sent in their letter and their cards. The letter was not one which it would take Mr. Westgate very long to read, but he came out to speak to them more instantly than they could have expected; he had evidently jumped up from his work. He was a tall, lean personage and was dressed all in fresh white linen; he had a thin, sharp, familiar face, with an expression that was at one and the same time sociable and businesslike, a quick, intelligent eye, and a large brown mustache, which concealed his mouth and made his chin, beneath it, look small. Lord Lambeth thought he looked tremendously clever. Click here for more

Alice

`Come, there's no use in crying like that!' said Alice to herself, rather sharply; `I advise you to leave off this minute!' She generally gave herself very good advice, (though she very seldom followed it), and sometimes she scolded herself so severely as to bring tears into her eyes; and once she remembered trying to box her own ears for having cheated herself in a game of croquet she was playing against herself, for this curious child was very fond of pretending to be two people. `But it's no use now,' thought poor Alice, `to pretend to be two people! Why, there's hardly enough of me left to make ONE respectable person!'
Soon her eye fell on a little glass box that was lying under the table: she opened it, and found in it a very small cake, on which the words `EAT ME' were beautifully marked in currants. `Well, I'll eat it,' said Alice, `and if it makes me grow larger, I can reach the key; and if it makes me grow smaller, I can creep under the door; so either way I'll get into the garden, and I don't care which happens!' The Man

Bartley laughed. "She had been very handsome, but not in Winifred's way. When I knew her she was little and fragile, very pink and white, with a splendid head and a face like fine old lace, somehow,--but perhaps I always think of that because she wore a lace scarf on her hair. She had such a flavor of life about her. She had known Gordon and Livingstone and Beaconsfield when she was young,--every one. She was the first woman of that sort I'd ever known. You know how it is in the West,--old people are poked out of the way. Aunt Eleanor fascinated me as few young women have ever done. I used to go up from the works to have tea with her, and sit talking to her for hours. It was very stimulating, for she couldn't tolerate stupidity." Click here for more

The Journey

I am well aware, at the same time, as both my travels and observations will be altogether of a different cast from any of my forerunners, that I might have insisted upon a whole nitch entirely to myself; - but I should break in upon the confines of the Vain Traveller, in wishing to draw attention towards me, till I have some better grounds for it than the mere Novelty of my Vehicle.
It is sufficient for my reader, if he has been a traveller himself, that with study and reflection hereupon he may be able to determine his own place and rank in the catalogue; - it will be one step towards knowing himself; as it is great odds but he retains some tincture and resemblance, of what he imbibed or carried out, to the present hour. The Spirit

It was then for the first time I noticed her particularly, and thought something of the kind about her - that it, something of a particular kind. Yes, I remember another impression - that is, if you will have it, perhaps the chief impression, that summed up everything. It was that she was terribly young, so young that she looked just fourteen. And yet she was within three months of sixteen. I didn't mean that, though, that wasn't what summed it all up. Next day she came again. I found out later that she had been to Dobranravov's and to Mozer's with that jacket, but they take nothing but gold and would have nothing to say to it. I once took some stones from her (rubbishy little ones) and, thinking it over afterwards, I wondered: I, too, only lend on gold and silver, yet from her I accepted stones. That was my second thought about her then; that I remember. That time, that is when she came from Mozer's, she brought an amber cigar-holder. It was a connoisseur's article, not bad, but again, of no value to us, because we only deal in gold. As it was the day after her "mutiny", I received her sternly. Sternness with me takes the form of dryness. As I gave her two roubles, however, I could not resist saying, with a certain irritation, "I only do it for you, of course; Mozer wouldn't take such a thing." Click here for more

Venus

About seven o'clock he went up to his sitting-room. A difficult and ungrateful task was before him. To facilitate her removal, he must persuade the goddess to take up a position in the saloon for the night; and, much as he had suffered from her, there was something traitorous in delivering her over to these coarse burglars. He waited until the statue showed signs of returning animation, and then said, "Good evening, mum," more obsequiously than usual. She never deigned to notice or return his salutations. "Hairdresser," she said abruptly, "I am weary of this sordid place." Click here for more

That's when I glanced at his hands and saw the tattle-tale signs one user sees on others..  He was doctored up with E-motion appendages, maybe the whole hands to the wrist for all I could see. I felt like a fool.  The chair he was sitting in was a wheel chair with a porta-potty under his bottom; I wasn't the only one with handicaps that couldn't be seen.  “I know that Vainwal has a red sun, and that the Terran Legate reported she could use a trained Intelligence officer. She said she would not pin him down to a desk.” Click here for more

The Island

Scarcely, however, had they gone a quarter of a league when, having ki lled a kid, he begged Jacopo to take it to his comrades, and request them to cook it, and when ready to let him know by firing a gun. This and some dried fruits and a flask of Monte Pulciano, was the bi l l of fare. Dantes went on, looking from time to time behind and around about him. Having reached the summit of a rock, he saw, a thousand feet beneath him, his companions, whom Jacopo had rejoined, and who were all busy preparing the repast which Edmond's ski l l as a marksman had augmented with a capital dish. Mansions

The impression of an intelligent unhuman being addressing me in anger took so firm a hold on my mind that the old fear returned, and, rising, I began to walk rapidly away, intending to escape from the wood. The voice continued violently rating me, as it seemed to my mind, moving with me, which caused me to accelerate my steps; and very soon I would have broken into a run, when its character began to change again. There were pauses now, intervals of silence, long or short, and after each one the voice came to my ear with a more subdued and dulcet sound -- more of that melting, flute-like quality it
had possessed at other times; and this softness of tone, coupled with the talking-like form of utterance, gave me the idea of a being no longer incensed, addressing me now in a peaceable spirit, reasoning away my unworthy tremors, and imploring me to remain with it in the wood. Click here for more

Love

"Strength and luck, mon," said our Scotch professional, "the more luck. It war th' same as when ye won a match with me by makin' th' last three holes in less than bogy. Luck, mon, is yer truest friend." I think Kirkaldy is right.
"I never like to take up a thing unless it is difficult," said Harding, as we started for the eighteenth tee. "I like to do the things other men say cannot be done, and without blowing my own horn I have done a few of them. Click here for more

She turned, and, catching Marche's eyes, smiled adorably, with a slight nod of comradeship. Then, the smile still faintly curving her lips, she crossed her legs in the pit, and, warming her hands  in the pockets of her coat, leaned back, resting against the rail behind. "You haven't a foot-warmer," he said. "I'm not cold—only my fingers—a little—stooling those birds." They spoke in low voices, under their breath. Click here for more

Part 2

When the water calmed down, I saw a little hand come thrusting through the surface. “He’s drowning!” hissed Sarah. “Go save him, Anthony!”
I started forward, but Albert was already hauling himself onto the edge of the sink. He shook his head, spattering tiny drops of water in all directions. Then stood, stretched his arms, threw his head back, and growled.
It was a tiny sound terrifying nonetheless. He walked along the edge of the basin, looking puzzled. “What a strange white road,” he muttered. I cleared my throat.  Find more here

Puppy 2

Part 2
The dog opened his eyes, and yawned. What a wonderful nap he had just had! Better than usual, even. His family, the Callahans, had a big house, full of comfortable places to sleep. The dog had never been able to choose his favorite spot, so every day, he took turns trying out different places. There were couches and rugs and beds and chairs and fireplace hearts – and once, he had even sprawled out in an empty bathtub. But it felt too slippery and cold, so he had climbed out and curled up on the fluffy bath mat, instead.
There were nice places to relax out in the backyard, too. He didn’t really like to lie in the snow, but grass, and dry leaves, and mud, and big piles of dirt were all fun. Find more here

Curtains for Three 2

Part 2
The young woman took a pink piece of paper from her handbag, got up from the red leather chair, put the paper on Nero Wolfe’s desk, and sat down again. Feeling it my duty to keep myself informed and also to save Wolfe the exertion of learning forward and reaching so far, I arose and crossed to hand the paper to him after a glance at it. It was a check for five thousand dollars, dated that day, august fourteenth, made out to him, and signed Margaret Mion. He gave a look and dropped it back on the desk.Find more here

The River of Gold 2

Sunday, August 7, 2011

Part 2
The story occurs in Serawak, a jungle-covered state on the northern coast of Borneo just above the Equator. Many of the people of Sarawak live along the interior rivers in communal vollages called longhouses. The villages, however, are not composed of many separate houses, but usually of one long house, which stretches snake-like along a riverbank. Individual families own a section of the longhouses, but share a common ruai or verandah which joins all the sections together. Here, on the ruai, much of the indoor labour and social activity takes place. Here too, the household animals can usually be found. Find here more

Vanity Fair 3 and 4

Part 3 and 4
On a sunny morning in June, about the year 1813, there drove up to the gates of Miss Pinkerton’s school for young ladies, a large family coach, with two fat horses, driven by a fat coachman. As a servant got down and rang the bell, at least twenty young heads were seen gazing out of the narrow windows of the old brick house.
“It is Mrs. Sedley’s coach, sister,” said gentle Miss Jemima, in the headmistress’s room.
“have you completed all the necessary preparations for Miss Sedley’s departure?” asked the great Miss Pinkerton herself. Find here more and here too.

With shoulders drooped, Asahina-san dejectedly returned to her seat. She was just too pitiable. The sight of her gripping her pencil, arms wrapped around her head, brings out burning compassion and sympathy.
On a whim, my eyes shifted to the perfectly nondescript corner of the table, and there was, precious for this clubroom's scenery, the figure of Nagato-not-reading.
"............"
Though it was Nagato keeping silently frozen as she stared at the notebook computer's display, touching the keyboard and entering something, freezing up again, and then hitting keys with a tap-tap. So, she's become an ornament again.
What Nagato was using was a notebook computer we had taken from the Computer Club as a prize for a game competition. Incidentally, similar things were in front of Koizumi and me, and with nothing much to think about, the CPU cooling fan was already spinning noisily to cool its brain down. The sight of Koizumi's fingers moving rhythmically and the sounds as he punched keys annoyed me like hell. So he's settled on what he was going to write, isn't that nice. Find more here

Of course, it isn't like her to stay quiet, and it definitely isn't a change of heart. Haruhi never doubts herself. Even if her personality has a slight or subtle change, she will never question herself. Anyway, if such a change were to happen, I would be put in a troublesome situation. So at this moment in time, I wouldn't bother to try and correct her. How should I put this... there's a type of quietness that's like a continuously radiating kirlian photograph in which the light has gone from burning red to a duller orange which is subtly surrounding her.
Of all the people in the class only one, at most two will be able to realize that she is not quite the
same as usual. Of these two, one is me. Find more here

This happened in my first year in high school.

The year when the humanoid climatic anomaly known as Suzumiya Haruhi began her rampage, and also the most eventful year in my life. A year that gives me enough to fret about just by thinking back on all the troublesome events. When looking through my memory photo album, I found all sorts of jaw dropping things that had happened. One of these little events still makes a deep impression in the back of my mind, so allow me to share it with everyone.

It was a time when the remnant summer heat refuses to leave the islands, making one suspect
that someone had accidentally triggered a weather changing mechanism, since the calendar was
already pointing to an autumn season. Find more here

This so-called co-ed activity in reality was just a forced kidnapping. Originally, I thought that since summer vacation was still young, I should not be getting any flak for sleeping till past noon on the first few days, yet that impatient and heartless president decided to depart on day 1 of the summer vacation, which ripped apart my seamless plan. Thanks to this woman, by the time my body adjusted to "Summer Mode" as it had in past years, there were only a few days left in July.

It need not be mentioned that I had no will to level the mound of summer vacation homework that I carried back from school. It shouldn't be too late to do it in August, so I simply squandered away the month of July. Who knew that come August, I would accompany my energetic, spunky little sister on a rural visit meeting cousins that we hadn't seen in ages, and head to the mountain, or river stream, or the plains, and spend two whole weeks playing? We played till we dropped. I will only admit to it if somebody says that I had it coming. Find more here

It was a cold morning. So cold that it felt like the whole world would get neatly chipped up with some nice crisp cracks if it were poked with an ice pick. Or better yet, I would lead the pack to chip this freaking cold world up.

Nevertheless, it was just natural to be cold; it was winter now. Until the Cultural Festival about a month ago, it had been so terribly hot. Then, just as it turned December, the weather chilled rapidly as if Mother Nature finally remembered, and now I experienced with this body of mine a Japan that had no Autumn this year. Don't tell me that a certain somebody mixed up a business
prosperity rebus with a spell... That Siberian cold air system should just as well change its course. There is no need for it to come down every year like that.  Find more here

I don't know what Itsuki, Yuki, or Mikuru are thinking, but here is what my self-diagnosis tells me, at least. My mind and body are healthy, but every time something happens, I feel as if I am some sort of small round animal that can't move easily because I ate too much. The same ending always happens, and that is myself rolling on and on down the hill.

Perhaps I have already started rolling.

Haruhi has a very bothersome habit: whenever her mind is not filled with happy thoughts, she starts thinking up ideas that make you want to laugh and cry at the same time. Anyway, she just cannot endure sitting still and doing nothing. She is just that kind of person. Whenever she has nothing to do, she will go and find something to do. This will usually be something absurd. From my personal experiences, whenever Haruhi says something, the rest of us will not be able to enjoy our peaceful days. Perhaps those good old days will never come back. What a troublesome person. Find more here

Haruhi seems like the kind of person who shouldn't have any worries. But, she does. Only the thing that's bothering her is that "The world is too mundane."
To her, the "Non-mundane things" are any kind of supernatural phenomena, meaning she often thinks things like "I can't believe there's not even half a ghost appearing before me."
I should also let you know that the word "ghost" can be replaced with "aliens", "time-travelers",or "espers." However, it is common knowledge that these things only appear in fiction novels. They simply don't exist in reality. Which means, as long as Haruhi continues to live in this world, she will continue to be bothered by this fact. The world is supposed to be like this; nothing out of the ordinary. However, recent events in my life have made it very hard for me to have confidence in this fact; I'm also bothered. Find more here

Unfortunately, reality is surprisingly cruel... No one got transferred to my class. I've never seen a UFO. When I went to places that were rumored to be haunted, nothing showed up. Two hours of intense staring didn't make my pencil move a single millimeter, and glaring at my classmate's head didn't reveal his thoughts to me either. I couldn't help but get depressed at how normal the laws of physics were. I began to stop watching for UFOs and paying attention to paranormal TV shows because I finally convinced myself it was impossible. I even reached a point where I only had a sense of nostalgia for those things. Find more here

A Brief Look at Writing

Writing is one of the skills that must be learned and mastered by students at any level of education. This skill is considered the most difficult than the other three skills.  Some experts considered that this skill is just like swimming or cycling. One will never be able to swim or cycle only by thinking or dreaming it without practising it. With this simple analogy, proposed by Chastain (1989), writing needs much practice. Practice makes perfect, right. For beginners, writing is very difficult, it looks no ideas acroos their mind or they are confused how to write so many ideas in their mind. But do you know that even the advanced writers they still need a little guidance to write. The difference only that they "very often" write while the beginners write "very rarely". Many advanced writers when they get ideas, they directly write them before the ideas gone. Sometimes they write key words before they write them in a good systematic writing. This site will , later on, give you the "little guidance" to fetch you to become experts in writing especially english writing. Get free books in the ebooks bar.
