The story occurs in Serawak, a jungle-covered state on the northern coast of Borneo just above the Equator. Many of the people of Sarawak live along the interior rivers in communal vollages called longhouses. The villages, however, are not composed of many separate houses, but usually of one long house, which stretches snake-like along a riverbank. Individual families own a section of the longhouses, but share a common ruai or verandah which joins all the sections together. Here, on the ruai, much of the indoor labour and social activity takes place. Here too, the household animals can usually be found. Find more here
