On a sunny morning in June, about the year 1813, there drove up to the gates of Miss Pinkerton’s school for young ladies, a large family coach, with two fat horses, driven by a fat coachman. As a servant got down and rang the bell, at least twenty young heads were seen gazing out of the narrow windows of the old brick house.
“It is Mrs. Sedley’s coach, sister,” said gentle Miss Jemima, in the headmistress’s room.
